Designing for Waterjet

     

At Accujet we are able to accept CAD or design package files in over 50 different formats, the most common being; .dxf, .dwg, .ai, .svg, .dmx. The majority of our customers send us Autocad .dxf files. If you are designing a part for Waterjet please remember the following points.

Start with a good quality CAD drawing of the profile you want to cut, drawn to scale with no gaps, lines on lines or extra little lines. The finished part relies on your CAD file for accuracy.

Autocad release 12 ASCII .dxf files work well, later versions of Autocad can save in this format.

Minimum internal radius is approximately 0.5mm (half the jet width), this gives the waterjet great flexibility when cutting thicker materials, like having a milling cutter 1mm wide that will cut through 100mm of steel!

Avoid really small holes in thick material, these are often better drilled afterwards (we are happy to arrange that)

Choose the finish that’s suitable for your application, any finish 1-5 can be added to any part of your job. Mix and match finishes to save money , as each of the 5 fingers shown in the photo takes the same time to machine, so dropping down one level of finish on an unimportant part of your job could make a big difference to the time it takes. You choose the finish, you choose the price. We are happy to show you samples of the finishes available with waterjet.

If free issuing materials, just call us and check the size we need, it may well be less than you think. Some brittle materials may require special attention to avoid breakage.

Don’t assume that a traditionally hard to machine material will be expensive or difficult to cut. With waterjet titanium can be machined faster than mild steel!

The kerf width (width of the jet) is approximately 0.8mm, this will determine some of the parameters of your design

We can add taper if you need it +/- 9 degrees on all or any part of your profile

We can fixture and carry out multiple operations on your part.

You don’t have to use CAD, we can work with sketches, drawings or just ideas.
